THE IMPACT OF H.R.1 ON AMERICA’S HEALTH & SECURITY
The passage of H.R.1 poses a serious threat to the health and stability of millions across the country. With deep cuts to Medicaid ($930 billion) and SNAP ($230 billion), this bill would strip away essential services from families, seniors, children, and individuals already navigating serious health and economic challenges. We know the consequences may result in over 12 million people at risk of losing health coverage, hospitals, clinics, and emergency rooms will become overwhelmed, and food insecurity will worsen, especially in communities already under-resourced.
However, the devastating flooding in Central Texas, displacing hundreds of families, disrupting access to healthcare, destroying homes, and leaving communities in crisis, is an example of the impact of budget cuts on emergency preparedness and the termination of vital personnel to keep us all safe, in the air and on the ground.
When these essential programs are slashed, our ability to protect our children, seniors, and medically fragile individuals, crumples.
We’ve seen firsthand how Community Health Workers (CHWs), Promotores de Salud, and Community Health Representatives (CHRs) serve as trusted messengers and lifelines, helping individuals access care, stay connected to services, and manage the daily realities that affect their health.
That’s why we are committed to developing bilingual, culturally tailored training to equip these cultural influencers with the tools to navigate these policy changes, counter misinformation, and protect the health and dignity of our communities. Our nation’s security depends on community stability. These programs are more than budget lines; they are the backbone of our nation’s safety, emergency preparedness, and community resilience.
